Adult BJJ NoGi
BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU
In ground fighting, even a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant
BJJ teaches you to use position, leverage, and submissions — joint locks and chokeholds — to control and finish a larger opponent on the ground. Sparring (or 'rolling') and live drilling are central to every class. At KravZone, our BJJ NoGi program is led by Tyler Shew, a Caio Terra Association black belt, with Travis Latham (CTA purple belt) on the coaching team. You'll train with a roster that's serious about technique and supportive of beginners — competitive when it counts, no ego problems.

Comprehensive Training
Every BJJ class at KravZone includes technical instruction, drilling, and live rolling. You'll learn positions, submissions, escapes, and transitions that work both on the mat and in MMA. Beginners start with the fundamentals; advanced students drill competition-level scenarios.
Emphasis on No-Gi
We focus on No-Gi grappling because it's the form that translates most directly to real-world self-defense and MMA. No-Gi develops a more athletic, dynamic style — one that holds up against opponents in regular clothes, on hard surfaces, in any environment outside the gym.
NoGi for All Levels
Many traditional BJJ schools teach no-gi only to advanced grapplers. We don't. KravZone runs full classes for beginners, intermediate, and advanced — so anyone can start, regardless of experience.
The Most Updated Techniques
BJJ evolves every year — new positions, new submissions, new defenses. Our affiliation with the Caio Terra Association (CTA), one of the strongest competitive teams in the world, means our syllabus stays current with what actually works on the mat at the highest levels.
Opportunities to Compete
As a KravZone student, you can compete at BJJ no-gi tournaments throughout the year. Train under Tyler Shew, our head BJJ instructor — a Caio Terra Association black belt and award-winning competitor (most recently double gold at the 2026 Santa Cruz Open in both gi and no-gi). KravZone students also have access to competition camps at CTA headquarters, just 20 minutes from our Sunnyvale dojo.
SKILLS OF SELF-DEFENSE
Most fights end up on the ground — and that's where untrained people are at the greatest disadvantage. BJJ teaches you to control any opponent from there using technique instead of strength. You'll learn to escape from underneath someone, sweep a position to your favor, and finish a confrontation safely with submissions like joint locks and chokeholds. The skills carry over to MMA, real-world self-defense, and any situation where you need to stay calm under physical pressure.

Defensive and Offensive Maneuvers
Every BJJ class blends defense with attack. You'll drill escapes from disadvantaged positions, learn to chain submissions and sweeps, and roll live with training partners at varying intensities. Class structure is consistent: technical instruction, drilling what you've learned, then controlled rolling. Some bumps and bruises are part of the process — our coaching keeps the room safe and respectful.
Diverse and Inclusive Classes
Our adult BJJ classes welcome everyone — from total beginners to active competitors. Roughly half our roster is men in their 30s and 40s building a grappling skill set from scratch; the rest includes women, college-age athletes, and adults cross-training from striking arts. Skill levels range from white belt newcomers to advanced practitioners. Beginner-friendly classes run alongside competition-focused training, and every student gets coaching matched to their level.
Our Affiliation
KravZone's BJJ program is officially affiliated with the Caio Terra Association (CTA) — a global team that has produced multiple world champions and is widely recognized as one of the leading No-Gi grappling academies. Head BJJ instructor Tyler Shew is a CTA black belt; Travis Latham is a CTA purple belt. KravZone is also the official US representative of WKM (Wingate Krav Maga), part of the Levinsky-Wingate Academic College — Israel's national authority on combat sports.
